Where can I get the App?

You can get it either on iTunes app store or Google Play like any other app. Search for 'My Friend Freddy Bear' or follow the links at the top of the website.

Can the App work without a Freddy Bear?

The information about the child can be input without a Freddy Bear paired to the smart device. The activities and conversation only work when a Freddy Bear is paired via Bluetooth.

Can I use Freddy Bear with more than one phone or tablet?

Freddy Bear works like any other Bluetooth device in that he can only be connected to one phone or tablet at a time. If you want to pair Freddy Bear with a different device, be sure to unpair him from the original device first, or even better, disable the Bluetooth on the first device.

How do I play with Freddy Bear?

There is a demo video on the ‘help’ page of the website which shows how to set up Freddy Bear and use all the features. You can also press the ? button within the app to see what each button does.

Why does Freddy Bear's voice sound like that?

My Friend Freddy Bear works using speech-to-text technology, which enables the input of the child's information by typing anything into the app, rather than being restricted to a few options in a drop-down menu. The app converts this text into speech, which Freddy Bear says. To allow this special feature to work Freddy Bear has to use a specific voice which has been designed for speech-to-text technology by a company called Nuance. Freddy Bear reads out one word at a time and uses very few pre-recorded sentences, which is why some grown ups think he sounds a little robotic.

How safe is Freddy Bear to play with?

Freddy Bear's app doesn't connect to the internet so it's totally safe for a young child to play with. There is even a bad words filter on the areas where information is typed in at home.

Can I adjust Freddy Bear’s volume?

Freddy Bear’s volume can easily be adjusted in the Settings page in the App. The volume control on the smart device he’s paired with will also change his volume.

Does Freddy Bear speak different languages?

There is a switch in Freddy’s back which can be set to English, French or German. This changes the language he speaks in (and the sound of his voice) when he’s hugged, tipped upside down or thrown in the air but it doesn't change the language he speaks when he's connected to the app.

Hints and Tips

Freddy will only pair with one device at a time.

Freddy will pair with the device he’s been most recently paired with first. If this is not the correct device, turn off Bluetooth on the incorrect device and re-try. Once Freddy is paired with one device he cannot accept a connection with an additional device at the same time.

Troubleshooting

The app won’t let me enter anything in the free text fields (e.g. Name, Favourite Food etc.)

Some Android devices come with custom/non-standard keyboard software installed by the manufacturer, and a limited number of these have been shown to have a problem interacting with the My Friend Freddy app. In your device settings, go to ‘Language & Keyboard’ and try selecting the standard Android keyboard, or visit the Play Store and try downloading a free generic keyboard extension such as Google Keyboard (available here).

What is the minimum specification for my mobile device?

  • Memory: 250Mb free space for installing the app. 64Mb free space for the app to run.
  • Bluetooth: 3.0 or higher
  • Processor: x86-64 or ARM; 1GHz or above.
  • Android: 4.0.3 or higher. Not compatible with Kindle Fire. iOS: 7.1 or higher

Freddy Bear is very quiet - how can i make him louder?

First make sure the volume of your phone or tablet is tuned all the way up. Then open the app and go into the Settings menu and make sure Freddy's volume is turned up. If this doesn't work try turning the volume down and up again a few times. Please note that Freddy Bear is made so his volume via the app can't exceed the maximum safe level for children.

The app stopped or froze.

Hit the pause/play button on the home page twice and try again. If that doesn’t work try re-starting the app.
